Buying an Italian Leather Bag in the UK: Import Duty, VAT and British-Made
Since Brexit, an Italian leather bag bought online is an import, and many UK shoppers have met a surprise charge on the doorstep. Here is what actually applies, in plain terms, along with what “British-made” and “Made in Italy” really promise and the checks that decide whether a bag is worth the money.
Do you pay import duty on an Italian leather bag in the UK?
Usually not, if the bag genuinely originates in the EU. Under the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement, goods that meet its rules of origin enter the UK at 0% customs duty, provided the seller supplies a statement on origin. Without that proof, the UK Global Tariff rate for leather bags applies instead. VAT is a separate charge.

When do you pay VAT on a bag bought from Italy?
UK VAT at 20% is due on almost every bag bought from Italy. On parcels worth £135 or less, the overseas seller must charge it at checkout, according to HM Revenue & Customs. On parcels over £135, import VAT is collected at the border, and the courier usually adds a handling fee before delivering — the surprise charge many shoppers meet.
Tuscany Bags UK prices in pounds, and any duties and VAT applicable to your order are accounted for before dispatch, so there is nothing to pay when it arrives.
| Parcel value | VAT | Customs duty | Who collects it |
|---|---|---|---|
| £135 or less | 20%, charged at checkout | None | The seller |
| Over £135, EU-origin with proof | 20% import VAT | 0% under the UK–EU TCA | Courier, before delivery (unless prepaid) |
| Over £135, no proof of origin | 20% import VAT | UK Global Tariff rate | Courier, before delivery (unless prepaid) |

What does “British-made” mean on a leather bag?
“British-made” has no single legal definition for leather goods, but the claim must not mislead. UK consumer law, now the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024, bans false or misleading statements about a product's geographical origin. A British-made bag should have been made in Britain; the hide can still be imported, so ask where it was tanned.
Britain keeps some remarkable tanning traditions. J & FJ Baker in Colyton, Devon, is one of the last oak-bark tanneries, curing hides over roughly a year. Italy's strength is scale: according to UNIC – Concerie Italiane, it produces around two-thirds of the European Union's finished leather, much of it in Tuscany and the Veneto.

Does “Made in Italy” mean the leather is Italian?
“Made in Italy” on a leather bag means its last substantial transformation took place in Italy under EU origin rules (Union Customs Code, Article 60), so a bag sewn in Italy can use hide tanned elsewhere. Only the stricter “100% Made in Italy” claim, defined in Italian Law 166/2009, requires design, processing and packaging to happen entirely in Italy.
The quick checks for the hide itself, from smell to edges, are in how to spot authentic Italian leather.

Is Italian leather worth it in the UK's wet weather?
Full-grain Italian leather is worth it in the UK's wet weather if you blot it after rain and let it dry slowly. Vegetable-tanned hide copes with a shower and darkens into a patina over time; what damages it is fast drying on a radiator, which leaves it stiff and cracked. Condition every few months through central-heating season.

Frequently asked questions
Do I pay customs charges on a leather bag from Italy?
A leather bag from Italy that meets the UK–EU Trade and Cooperation Agreement's rules of origin enters the UK at 0% customs duty. Import VAT at 20% still applies on parcels over £135, usually collected by the courier with a handling fee, unless the seller has prepaid it, as Tuscany Bags UK does.
What is the £135 rule for parcels from the EU?
The £135 rule means overseas sellers must charge UK VAT at checkout on goods sent to UK consumers in consignments worth £135 or less, instead of VAT being collected at the border. Above £135, import VAT and any duty are collected on arrival, according to HM Revenue & Customs.
Is Italian leather real leather?
Yes, Italian leather is real animal hide that has been tanned in Italy, but the phrase does not tell you the grade. Full-grain Italian leather is the strongest and ages into a patina; a bag labelled only “genuine leather” is usually a lower split grade. Check for “full-grain” and “vegetable-tanned” on the label.
Are British-made leather bags better than Italian ones?
British-made leather bags are not better or worse than Italian ones by origin alone. Britain has fine traditional tanneries, such as J & FJ Baker's oak-bark tannery in Devon, while Italy produces around two-thirds of the EU's finished leather. Quality comes from the hide grade, the tanning and the stitching.
Why was I charged extra when my parcel from Italy arrived?
A parcel from Italy worth more than £135 is charged UK import VAT at 20% on arrival, and couriers usually add a clearance fee, unless the seller prepaid them. If the goods lacked proof of EU origin, customs duty may have been added too. Tuscany Bags UK accounts for duties and VAT before dispatch.
Which law protects me when I buy a leather bag online in the UK?
The Consumer Rights Act 2015 protects UK buyers by requiring goods to be of satisfactory quality, fit for purpose and as described. Tuscany Bags UK sells under the Consumer Rights Act 2015, with prices in pounds and duties and VAT accounted for before dispatch.
Where are Tuscany Bags' leather bags made?
Every bag sold by Tuscany Bags UK is made in Italy, by Tuscan workshops including Tuscany Leather in Florence, and sold as an authorised reseller in pounds sterling. Tuscany Bags does not sell British-made goods; if supporting UK manufacturing is your priority, buy from a British maker.
